June 2012

Have not updated for a while as life has been too hectic and boring. :-(

Did the Lotus Club trackday at Castle Coombe last month with my daughter, Louisa. It was glorious weather (26 degrees and no clouds - got a little bit of sunburn on my hand - even though I put cream on.

The track was virtually empty - at one point it was me and three other Lotus in the session - fabulous. We had a really good day - hood down all day and all the way home :-)

I did notice that when the disks got hot I was getting a rumble and vibration under braking.

I had had a little bit of trouble getting the Elan off the trailer after the trip to Spa as the EBC Blue pads had fused to the disks! this had left some pad material on the disks. I had given it a fast road trip with heavy braking and thought this had cleared it - it was not sufficient.

I remembered that I had read somewhere on the internet about on the car hub centric disk skimming - so I did a bit of investigation. I found a place in Botley near Southampton which had the equipment - Hutfields, 19c High Street, Botley SO30 2EA 01489 783 117 chris@hutfields.co.uk.

Spoke to Chris and organised to go down on the next Saturday morning at 9am, but first of all I had to find out what the hubs were from!

Good old LEC (Lotus Elan Central) came to the rescue - quick search and found out they are 1988 GM Astra GSI hubs - great said Chris - he had that fitment.

So crack of dawn on the Saturday I was up and on the road to Hutfields - Chris is a really nice guy - it took him 20 minutes to set up the first wheel. Stage one is to fit the hub adapter see photo. On this photo you can see the pad transfer "stain" just below the caliper - it was much worse on the other disk. These "stains" cause hot spots under braking and this is what gives you the vibration and rumble.

Next you attach the machine to the hub adapter and the brake disk - see photo and off it went. Chris has to fine tune it while it does the first cut, It takes about 9 mins once it has all been set up.

Here is the finished article - all smooth and blemish free.
Only thing I forgot to do was take the new pads with me Doh! So we had to leave the old "blues" in until I got home and I then swapped them over.

Chris charges £30 a side plus VAT which is very reasonable.
